The unit focus begins with an overview of the book and author.
The rest of this page presents the Adventist Worldview graphic customized to show an Essential Question, Big Idea, and bulleted thought points that are directly related to the theme.
Focus on print concepts, phonics, word recognition and fluency. These will be found in World Study and Small Group Reading Instruction.
Focus on collaboration and presenting knowledge and ideas. These will be found in whole group reading and writing mini-lessons.
Focuses on understanding demands of narrative text. Look for these standards in whole and small group mini-lessons.
Focuses on grammar, vocabulary, and conventions. Look for these standards in vocabulary, spelling, and grammar mini-lessons.
Informational Text focuses on understanding the demand of nonfiction text. Look for these standards in whole and small group lessons.
Focuses on text types and purpose, writing process, and research to build and present knowledge. Look for these standards in writing mini-lessons.

Each skill has a four-part code. For example, LA.3.RL.3:
LA stands for Language Arts
3 represents the grade level
RL stands for Language Arts domain “Literature”
3 represents the fourth skill under the “Reading: Informational Text” domain.
Examples of the types of pre-assessment, formative, and summative assessments are listed for vocabulary, spelling, reading, and writing.

Each week has 5 days of lessons centered in three instructional blocks:
• Word Study: Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Vocabulary, and Spelling
• Reading Workshop: Whole-group (Comprehension and daily shared reading) and Small group (guided and independent reading)
• Writing Workshop: Writing and grammar mini-lessons (alternate days), guided and independent writing, and handwriting.
