Word Study

Word study includes the process of helping children understand the relationships between letters and sounds, realize that written words are composed of letter patterns representing the sounds of spoken words, identify words quickly and accurately to learn their meaning, and learn how to spell words. In Pathways 2.0 Word Study encompasses Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Spelling, and Vocabulary instruction.

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics are taught in grade 1. Spelling and Vocabulary are taught in all grades. Spelling instruction is based on the Words Their Way by Shane Templeton word sorts which focus on critical features of words: sound, pattern, and meaning. Vocabulary includes instruction in both anchor text and academic vocabulary.

  • For grades 1 and 2 the first block is 30 minutes of Word Study
  • Vocabulary instruction is designed for 10 minutes. The anchor text vocabulary and academic vocabulary are introduced focusing on word sorts and recorded in a word study notebook.
  • Phonics instruction is designed for 10 minutes focusing on Phonemic Awareness and Phonics that are built into the DLG.
  • Spelling instruction is designed for 10 minutes using word sorts and other instructional materials such as spelling city.

Each unit’s Word Study block includes instruction in vocabulary, phonological awareness, phonics, and spelling. Whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as independent reading are the components of the Reading Workshop block. The Writing Workshop block contains writing and language instruction.
